LO4: Final Project

This short film was made by myself, Will Hewitt and Jake Dungworth. All of us helping out each other in every aspect of the film, from filming to editing. We are very happy with the final product and received amazing feedback from everyone involved in the making of the product. Both the presenters and the guests were extremely happy with the final film and didn't give us any negative feedback to go out and either film again or re-edit. Therefore we are happy with how it looks and are extremely positive with the final outcome.

LO2: Legal and Ethical

Application for the use of copyrighted music
As we are planning for the use of copyrighted music from artists such as Gang Starr. We sent this email to different record labels requesting for the right to use music in our video. They didn't reply, but from previous experience wiring with copyrighted music in other projects; as long as we give all credit to the labels and artists in the video then we will be okay as the video is only for educational/promotional purposes.

Here is the email from Jose's Urban Expression Facebook profile asking me to create the documentary, so no actor's forms will be needed for legal and ethical issues as he consulted us first to create the video.

We need to make sure that we address the video is non-for-profit and to advertise a licensed hip-hop radio show when using tracks. This means we will give full credit to the record labels and artists' tracks we will use in the edit. Jose requested we use the tracks:

 "C.R.E.A.M." - Wu-Tang Clan
(from Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers - courtesy of Loud Records)

"What I'm Here 4" - Gang Starr
(From Moment of Truth - Courtesy of Noo Trybe/Virgin/EMI Records)

"Survival of the Fittest" - Mobb Deep
(From The Infamous - Courtesy of Loud Records)

"UK Riot Report" - Franz Von
(Courtesy of Franz Von)

Jose and Phil are both being interviewed in the show at their requests, and have also themselves asked MC Franz Von if he'll be up for being interviewed on camera to which he agreed.  The age certificate of the film will have to be considered as some of the content features language that may offend in the Hip Hop songs, as well as a freestyle by Jose which features a swear word. This means if the show is to be broadcast over Sheffield Live TV then it will have to be past 9'oclock which is the watershed given by regulatory body OFCOM.
Here is the email to Virgin Records to ask permission to use the track "What I'm Here 4" by Gang Starr.

Sheffield Live! and its radio show, Urban Expression already own a PRS license to play this type of music and because the video is for the program; we should be able to justify the use of the music due to the clients ownership of such a license. Also they were no found footage in our film apart from a title we used from a video off Franz Von's "UK Riot Report" track on YouTube. We were able to use the title. Heres the message from Franz Von to prove this, but apart from the title, all of our footage was completely %100 original.

LO1: Script interview

The footage for the documentary will rely heavily on responses from the presenters in interviews; here are the questions we asked them. The people featured in this film include Franz Vonz, Jose Spinola and Phil Robinson.
  • Who are you and what is the name of your show?
  • How did you first get into Hip Hop?
  • How do you think Hip Hop has changed?
  • What are your favourite artists and influences?
  • Are they any differences in opinion between yourself and your co-host?

LO1: Introduction

Throughout this project, we will be understanding the production process of an audio visual-media product. This will involve us creating an promotional, documentary, reality video to create awareness for the show Urban Expression and for the two presenters, Jose Spinola and Phil Robinson, who will be a big part of the production process.

In this unit, myself, Will Hewitt and Jake Dungworth will be creating a short documentary/promo into the radio show Urban Expression at Sheffield Live!. The show is a music talk show based around Hip Hop music that primarily revolves around the underground and 'old school' scene of rap music.

The main host of the show, Jose, contacted me and Will to do this after filming on set of Sheffield Live for a previous film trailer we created for Unit 46. He wanted us to create a short video that helps educate audiences who may not know about the history of Hip Hop as a culture about how the genre of music has changed since its beginnings. The documentary will also help promote the show and help express what they are aiming to do with the show.
